Learning Resources Source List
AALAS, as a service to our membership, provides these resources at our annual National Meeting. A list is provided of people and companies that have given or sold us videos in the last few years and to our knowledge are still in business or provide this service. A great resource supplier of videos to rent or borrow is the National Agricultural Library in Washington, D.C.

Covered topics include physiology, assessment of pain, ethical and societal issues, farm animal issues, drug treatments, non-pharmacological treatments, and complementary and alternative treatments (physical therapy/acupuncture). The course can be used in modules, selecting the lectures that are most needed (for example, a laboratory animal facility may not wish to present complementary techniques or farm animal issues). The veterinary technician will learn skills that will enhance his/her ability to recognize pain and to advocate for the patient.
Tape 1: Anatomy and Physiology of Pain Perception.
Tape 2: Measurement and Detection of Pain in Various Species.
Tape 3: Overview of Acute Pain Treatment: Reasons and Options.

- Humane Endpoints in Laboratory Animal Experimentation
- Year: 2006
- Description: The Humane Endpoints in Laboratory Animal Experimentation is an interactive educational and training program for those working with laboratory animals. The main goal of this program is to increase the awareness on and the implementation of humane endpoints. The term "Humane endpoint" can be defined as the point to which a research animal's pain and/or distress is terminated, minimized or reduced by performing humane euthanasia, terminating a painful procedure, or giving treatment to relieve pain and/or distress. The objective of the project is to contribute to the implementation of refinement to animal experiments by: Increasing the level of knowledge on normal biology and behavior of rodents; Increasing the awareness in animal pain and suffering and giving guidance to the use of analgesics; Improving the competence in the recognition of cardinal clinical signs; Stimulating the use of early (humane) endpoints. The CD offers extensive information on mice and rats. The first part contains chapters on normal behavior, pain and distress, and recognition of clinical signs. The next part contains information on pathology that may help to give the correct assessment of suffering and with taking action for following-up experiments. The last and the most important part describes the notion "humane endpoints", reasons for applying humane endpoints and an overview of parameters which can be used when applying humane endpoints. The responsibilities and validation of humane endpoints are discussed and relevant laws, guidelines and reports are also included. Also, the CD offers more than one hundred additional images and videos.
